A COUNTBACK was needed to decide the winners of a hotly-contested second round of the Winter League at Braintree Golf Club.
Two pairs returned 43 points in the fourball betterball competition, with Trevor Whiting (5) and Robert Jiggins (12) gaining the verdict over James Hedger (2) and Matthew Ramsey (6).
Four more pairs signed for 42 points and after another countback, Martin Hawes (1) and David Hawes (9) took third place ahead of Andrew Goldsmith (7) and Richard Mitchell (7).
Andrew Wiffen (6) and Michael Latta (7) were fifth and Steve Wright (10) and Chris Green (18) sixth.
The seniors' Captain’s Charity Day stableford was won by Andrew Little (12) with 39 points.
He finished one ahead of Peter Eveling (13), while Mike Gale (27) took third place on countback ahead of David Bethell (16), both on 36.
There was a clear winner of the ladies’ midweek stableford with Elizabeth Maynard (20) totting up 43 points, four ahead of Debra Blundell (26).
Two ladies tied on 37 points and after another countback Melinda Atkinson (14) finished third ahead of Gillian Barke (13).
