A new set of arrows proved spot-on for archery ace Imogen Newby as the Halstead youngster added yet another title to her rapidly-expanding list of achievements in the sport.
The ten-year-old Braintree Bowmen member was competing at the Southern Counties Archery Association Indoor Championships at Crawley in West Sussex and came away as the new SCAS Junior Ladies Under-12 Recurve champion.
Newby, who is a pupil at Chappel Primary School, made a slow start but gradually found her feet with her new equipment and began to rack up the high scores that brought her the title.
She said: “I decided to shoot with my new arrows and not the old ones I had been using all season, but I started with 50, 49 and the 47 and I was not pleased.
“I was starting to get frustrated with myself, knowing I can shoot better, but after a few calming breathing exercises, I turned the tide in my mind and shot 56, 52, 52.
“This continued until the end, scoring above 53 an end and 13 golds to achieve 522 out of a possible 600 points to become the SCAS Junior Ladies Under-12 Recurve champion.”
Newby was joined at Crawley by another ten-year-old Braintree Bowmen junior, Sydney Strugnell, who was taking part in her first major tournament.
Despite early nerves, Strugnell scored 433 to claim the SCAS Junior Ladies Under-12 silver medal.
