Halstead Cricket Club’s players want to bow out in style this weekend and put championship icing on the promotion cake that they have already baked.
A seven-wicket win against Easton on Saturday ensured the Star Stile side would be playing back in the top flight of the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship next summer.
And they now want to add the division two title to their list of achievements.
Standing in their way are the dual obstacles of Frinton seconds, who are currently heading the table and are 13 points in front of second-placed Halstead, and Braintree, who Halstead face today in their final game of the season.
While promotion is already assured, a win against their local rivals coupled with a slip-up by the current leaders would hand Halstead the division two title and captain Charlie Douglas-Hughes wants his players to make sure they give themselves the best opportunity of taking it.
He said: “We want to give ourselves every chance of doing just that.
“Unfortunately Copford were unable to do us a favour last weekend as they were beaten by Frinton, but our win against Easton has given us promotion and we’re now looking for a strong finish."
