Colchester United were knocked out of the Capital One Cup first round after losing 4-0 at Championship side Charlton Athletic at the Valley tonight.
The U’s fate was effectively decided in the 24th minute when defender Magnus Okuonghae was sent off by referee Charles Breakspear, who ruled that the Colchester skipper had deliberately handled Callum Harriott’s goalbound shot in the area.
Yoni Buyens despatched the resultant penalty and former U’s youngster Lawrie Wilson struck twice in four minutes early in the second half before Simon Church added a fourth late on, as Colchester went out of the League Cup at the first hurdle.
