Two tortoises and a bird died at the scene of a conservatory fire.

Crews were called to a fire in a house in Montsale, Basildon, this morning just after 7am, with reports that a number of animals were inside.

On arrival firefighters reported that the fire was in the conservatory and worked quickly to extinguish it by 7.30am.

Firefighters were able to save a bearded dragon and two dogs, but unfortunately two tortoises and a bird died at the scene.

Watch Manager Kevin Colby said: "Fortunately we were passing through the area at the time of the call so managed to arrive almost immediately and begin tackling the fire.

"As well as extinguishing the fire we saved a bearded dragon and two dogs, but unfortunately two tortoises and a bird died at the scene."

The cause of the fire has been recorded as accidental, and started when items that were piled on top of a heat lamp caught alight.

Mr Colby added: "It's so important that people are aware of their surroundings and ensure that clothing or material are not too close to any type of light or lamp as it can easily catch fire."
