SOUTHEND United’s manager has voiced his shock and horror at the magnitude of claims of child sex abuse in football.

Blues boss Phil Brown said the situation is “absolutely astounding” after 350 people made allegations of child sex abuse in the sport, according to the National Police Chief’s Council.

Essex Police has confirmed that they have launched investigations and are determined to thoroughly investigate any alleged incidents which may have taken place in the county, no matter how long ago the abuse may have taken place.

The multitude of investigations are taking place following allegations about former Crewe Alexandra youth coach Barry Bennell.

Bennell has been charged with eight offences of sexual assault against a boy aged under 14, alleged to have happened between 1981 and 1985.

Former Tottenham, Manchester City and Liverpool player Paul Stewart also claimed he had suffered sexual abuse on a daily basis for four years by a different youth coach.

Mr Brown said: “I find it absolutely astounding what is going on.

“I knew Paul Stewart fairly well as he had a bit to do with Blackpool when I was there.

“He was a great ambassador for the club and for him and the other players who have now come forward to suffer in silence like they did shows the strength of character they’ve had, because they’ve had great careers.

“They’re showing great courage and bravery, but how extreme this problem is, is actually scandalous.”

The NPCC said a “significant number of calls” had been received after several former players alleged past abuse by coaches. Its figures are also based on details from existing investigations as well as referrals from a new helpline, which was set up a week ago.

More than 860 people have called the dedicated football hotline and more than 60 referrals have been made to agencies across the UK.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “Information will be reviewed and investigated accordingly.

“We need those who have been the victim of child sexual abuse to report it to the police. We will listen, take the allegations seriously and a thorough investigation will be launched, no matter how long ago the abuse may have taken place.

“We also urge anyone who may have any information regarding child sexual abuse to come forward.”
