LEIGH'S seafront facilities will undergo a major revamp.

Southend Council has granted itself planning permission to extend the toilet block at Bell Wharf, in Old Leigh, to add an extra cubicle.

Two new indoor showers and changing rooms will also be created as part of the upgrade.

The toilet block, which currently has four toilets and two outdoor showers, was refurbished in 2003, but the council wants to further improve the facilities on offer for both locals and tourists.

It is anticipated that the revamp will be completed in time for the busy summer season after councillor officers gave the scheme the go-ahead.

In planning documents, a council spokesman said: "The proposed works are to improve the provision of public facilities in Old Leigh, with the aim of maintaining and promoting opportunities in Southend, whilst delivering opportunities for leisure and community uses that reflect the council's long term commitment to tourism."

"Through long term planning, innovation, and selection of materials and products the design aims to improve the quality of facilities to users, keep maintenance and running costs to a minimum and minimise the level of defects and breakdowns.

"This approach would provide a long term sustainable future and ensure the facility stands the test of time."

The council believes the extra toilet will help relieve some pressure from the existing facilities, which are well used.

There will be a small charge for access to the changing rooms, but officials have said the money will go towards the upkeep of the building.

Council officials have also said they will look to market the facilities to visiting sailors.

The plans were originally drawn up at the start of March.

It is not yet known how much the project will cost.
