TRANSPORT projects in South Essex will receive £7million of new funding.

Essex County Council’s local growth fund (LGF) will receive an allocation of money from the South East Local Enterprise Partnership.

Funding allocated includes the first phase of an “integrated transport package” for Basildon town centre.

The first phase of a project to redevelop the town centre, improve access to Basildon Hospital and upgrade cycling routes will receive £1million from the LGF and a further £1million from Essex County Council.

A project to improve bus networks across South Essex, including Southend and Thurrock, will receive £5million.

The scheme will focus on upgrading bus stops and waiting areas and improving information given to passengers about services.

Rayleigh and Rochford rail stations will also undergo major infrastructure improvements.

Paul Bird, Essex County Council director for commissioning, said: “The funding provided to LDF is a major fillip to the whole of Essex.

“This money will be used for a major investment package that will ensure a sustainable and first class transport system for Essex, one that aids the economic growth of the area and meets the demands of a growing population.”

Funding allocations for additional transport projects in Essex are expected to be approved later this year.
