HAT’S the way to do it!

A colourful collection of highclass headwear helped raise £800 for St Helena Hospice’s day centre when it went under the hammer.

The hats belonged to Val Estall, who died in October after a battle against cancer.

She was a member of Tendring Tangent – part of the Ladies’ Circle.

Her friends decided to hold an auction in her memory and to raise money for the hospice’s Clacton day centre, where Val’s husband Chris is an ambassador.

Tangent chairman Liz Harper said: “Val loved wearing her hats and had a great variety.

“She owned a lot, so we decided to auction them to members.

“We thought we would raise some money to say thank you to the day centre because they looked after Val and her family so well before she died. Val would have loved it.”

Members also held suppers and a quiz evening to boost the total.
