Stansted Airport’s boss has called for “a world-class rail link” to the airport to “unlock its potential” for a second runway.
Managing director Andrew Harrison spoke out following the Airports Commission’s final report in which a third runway was recommended for Heathrow.
The report also found there may be sufficient demand to justify one other additional runway in the UK by 2050.
Essex County Council believes a second runway at Stansted may be an inevitable option after 2030 and Mr Harrison has also predicted that Stansted’s existing runway will be full by that time.
Mr Harrison said: “With London growing increasingly to the east, Stansted provides an obvious solution for additional capacity.
“The government must now act to support the relaxation of planning caps at the appropriate time and improve rail connections to Stansted by investing in a world-class rail link."
