Halstead could be plunged into darkness in plans to turn off thousands of street lights to save energy and cash.

Essex County Council is consulting with Halstead Town Council and surrounding parish councils about turning off lights between midnight and 5am.

Main roads such as the High Street and part of Parsonage Street will remain lit as will roundabouts.

But routes such as Colchester Road, New Street and Kings Road, are to lose street lighting for five hours.

Halstead Town Council will debate the plans on August 9 and they are on display at Mill House, in The Causeway, Halstead, for people to comment on.

Yellow lights are set to stay on, green set to be turned off between midnight and 5am and red are developer owned.
