Families in the Braintree district are among the most at risk in the East of England of losing their homes.

Research by housing charity Shelter revealed mortgage lenders issued 175 possession claims for private homes in 2011/12.

This was equivalent to 3.44 claims per 1,000 private homes, placing the district 12th out of 47 in the region – above areas such as Tendring, Colchester and Chelmsford.

Nationally the district is ranked 125th, placing it among the second highest 20 per cent of areas in the country for possession claims.

In the national table, Braintree is 15 places higher than Tower Hamlets in London and 17 places above Hackney.
