CHART-TOPPER Matt Cardle made a surprise appearance at an open mic night just days before the start of the X Factor tour.

The X Factor winner took time out of preparations for the 46-show tour to team up with former band mate Ali McMillan for an intimate acoustic set at High Barn in Great Bardfield.

Wendy Meldrum, who works at the venue, said: "It was so lovely to see Matt and Ali back on the High Barn stage - it was like time had stood still!

“Despite all the media attention and crazy whirl of publicity, Matt remains a charming, totally grounded guy, this comes as no surprise to any of those who have worked or know him.

“All those who voted for Matt to win the X Factor show, can be proud of themselves for promoting true talented musicianship in a business that can often revel in the superficial.“ Ali and Matt were in the group Darwyn before the Little Maplestead singer joined Chelmsford band Seven Summers, and then entered last year’s X Factor.

Prior to his success, Matt was a regular patron of High Barn, where Ali now works.
