A PASSIONATE fitness enthusiast has opened a new gym facility in memorial of his brother who passed away.

Luke Breen, 28, moved to Great Yeldham six months ago with partner Ellie, and is opening Breen’s Gym, in Wash Farm, Queen Street, Sible Hedingham, last Wednesday.

Luke has “grown up” around gyms and always trained hard as his dad Tom, uncle and grandad’s work involved supplying gyms across the country with fitness equipment.

In October last year, after moving to Great Yeldham, Luke decided to open up his own.

After four years of collecting equipment with his dad and when the opportunity arose to take on a barn only five minutes down the road, he knew he had to go for it.

Luke said: “The village deserves a good gym and somewhere for locals to exercise, and the response so far has been overwhelming.

“Part of my inspiration to open Breen's Gym was the sudden death of my brother, Matt, who died in 2019.

“He and I went to the gym together every day and if he were still alive, we'd be opening the gym together.

"Tthat's why I felt it was important to name the gym after our surname.”

After six weeks of hard graft, Luke and his family have transformed an old grain barn.

It boasts an array of strength machines, treadmills, bikes, rowing machines, stairmasters, steppers, a boxing bag, cables, dumbbells and more.

Luke said: “My dad, Tom, is a key part of the business and has over 40 years’ experience which has helped tremendously.

“My girlfriend, Ellie, has supported me throughout and has been fundamental to us getting a gym open in just six weeks. She'll be by my side as always helping me run the gym.

“Ash, my younger brother, will be running the gym with me and has shown unwavering support.

“I should also mention Tom Breen and Meg Breen, my brother and sister-in-law who despite having six-month-old twins have helped carry treadmills upstairs and with admin.”
