MUSIC fans were treated to a live performance to brighten up the weekend.

Five-piece rock and soul band Route 66, from Sudbury, was at Halstead Public Gardens on Sunday.

The band, which regularly plays at events, parties and pubs, performed two hours of hits.

The event, organised by the town council, was free to attend and rounded out the summer events at the public gardens.

Mayor Jackie Pell, who was in attendance all day, was delighted with how it went.

She said: "I was sat there all afternoon in what was delightful weather in the end.

"It was organised by the town council and it marks the last in its summer series, before we now move on to thinking about winter events.

"There will still be the children’s activities going on Saturday mornings, of which we have two left.

"All in all it was an absolutely lovely afternoon, with lots of people.

"It was nice to see everyone turn out, young and old, and families with picnics.

"Route 66 have played here before, and people asked for them to come back. They are a popular choice alongside the Beavers."

She continued: "I think it is so popular because of the value for money, you can come along for free and just enjoy the day.

"No one cares who you are or where you come from. It is a real feel-good atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

"We typically do three events in the park each summer, and they are all well-received.

"The town council would love to do more. It is just expensive for us, but is always worth it when it does come around."

The planning now begins for the autumn and winter period, when the Christmas lights switch-on and torchlight procession are set to return.
