A CYBERCRIME event is being organised this month by a chamber of commerce.

The Burnham Chamber of Commerce will provide businesses from the Maldon district with the opportunity to find out more about employing an apprentice and the dangers of crime in cyberspace.

There will be a presentation from David Gibb, Cyber Protect Officer from the Cyber Crime Unit of the Essex and Kent Serious Crime Directorate, who will raise awareness of cyber-crime, the threats and how individuals can protect themselves.

Teresa Schrier, Managing Director of Premier Screening, will be talking about her business and its aim to provide clients with a comprehensive pre-employment background and vetting service designed to ensure a higher level of security and transparency, ensuring total piece of mind when conducting a new hire.

There will also be an exhibition of local businesses and the opportunity to network plus free light refreshments.

Adele Bovingdon, Chairman of the chamber, said: “We feel so secure sharing our personal and sometimes sensitive information with our online accounts, banking or otherwise, until these are compromised.

“Often, we underrate the importance of cyber security until a security breach and our valued information is stolen or inaccessible.

“These cyber-attacks affect big and small companies, and individuals, and they can be costly. As long as you’re connected to the internet, you need to invest in good cyber security and this is why we encourage as many businesses to attend what will be a very informative session.”

The event takes place on May 23 at 7pm at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club.
