GENEROUS builders from across the UK have come together to re-roof a disabled woman’s garage for free.

Lesley Chambers faced being left out of pocket when she had the garage roof at her Mayes Lane house in Ramsey relaid.

She was so disappointed with the new felt roofing, which she claimed was laid on rotten wooden timbers and had gaps in the felt, she refused to pay and was taken to court by the roofer - she lost.

Though the judge did knock £250 off her bill for the bill.

But after then losing an appeal, kind-hearted tradesmen from a roofing trade association came together to help.

Lesley, who can only walk by using two sticks, said: “It’s wonderful, I can’t believe it.

“The roof has to be taken off and re-done so I’m so relieved.

“I still have to pay the former roofer though.

“I feel so let down by the court system.

“I would tell anyone for any job to check they are in a confederation of builders.

“This man was recommended to me.”

Mark Williams, office manager at the Confederation of Roofing Contractors said the company, based in Brightlingsea, put out an appeal after being so appalled by the work and the fact she lost at court.

He said: “It would have been awful if she had of paid out twice.

“She is a really nice lady and it really got to her.

“There are gaps, it’s going to lift odd and leak, it’s awful, it’s a patchwork quilt.

“We felt she had been hard done by, more by the courts than the roofer.

“The response we had to our appeal, just from the pictures of the roof, was that it was a disgrace.

“One of our guys based in Leicester is going to do it for free and he has had suppliers call him saying he can use materials for free.

“People from Northern Ireland offered materials.”

He added: “The roofing profession doesn’t have a good reputation - shows like Rogue Traders and Cowboys Builders normally have a roofer on there.

“But they aren’t all like that.”
