AN INSPIRATIONAL girl from Burnham has landed a starring role in a new online BBC campaign which tackles cyberbullying.

Honey Lock, 12, of Dragon Close, Burnham, has suffered from cerebral palsy all her life, meaning she uses crutches to help her walk.

In 2011, she travelled to America to have life changing selective dorsal rhizotomy surgery, to make her legs less stiff.

The following years have seen Honey drastically improve, with her being able to walk several steps with no help, going from a wheelchair to walking sticks.

Now, the Plume Academy student has managed to get a lead role in the advertising of the BBC’s online website “Own It” which helps children with fun and empowering tips, insight, stories and advice on how to control their online life in an age of growing social media presence.

The advert, which is airing on BBC One throughout the week plus being available on YouTube, sees Honey and several other children playing around in a colourful studio whilst battering away offensive words such as “freak” and “loser”.

Despite not being longer than a minute, the advert required Honey to film for seven hours at the BBC studios in London.

Honey’s parents Rebecca and Martin are “incredibly proud” of their daughter’s achievements.

Rebecca said: “Honey is our shining beacon of joy. Several years ago we were told she may never walk or talk properly, and now she’s up and about and modelling for the BBC.

“She’s worked so, so hard to get to this point, and she really wants it. To be featured in an advert that’s online and airing on one of the most popular TV channels in the country is such an incredible achievement.

“The amount of confidence she has now is incredible.”

Honey is due to have a foot reconstruction operation at Broomfield Hospital in the coming weeks to further help the strength in her legs, which has been funded by the NHS.

Her family is once again fundraising to help pay for the ongoing physiotherapy which costs around £8,000 a year to ensure she continues to improve.

Rebecca added: “We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone in the community who has helped and supported us so far, and to Plume Academy who have been absolutely wonderful with her since she began in September.

“It’s vital that Honey’s physiotherapy continues so she can get even better, so any support or donations by anyone will mean the world to her.”
