RESIDENTS are warning drivers to slow down and have suggested cameras to monitor their movements at zebra crossings, claiming they do not leave enough time for pedestrians to get across the road.

A number of zebra crossings in Colchester have been branded dangerous, as drivers are moving off before pedestrians have finished crossing. Residents say the most dangerous crossings are in Berechurch Hall Road, Mersea Road and Harwich Road.

Josie Harvey, from Colchester, walks her son Harvey Thompson, eight, to St George’s Junior School and uses the Berechurch Hall Road crossing.

She said: “My main issue is when we find it safe to cross, we don’t even get to the middle of the road and the drivers start driving across.

“Anything could happen, my son could trip or drop something and if we did we would be hit by a car.

“It’s obviously not just us that cross there, it’s school children going to Monkwick Junior School who walk on their own.”

Residents feel there should be a camera monitoring the crossing or a timer which tells drivers when they can start moving off.

She said: “I’m just looking out for children on their journey to school as my son one day will be travelling alone.”

Another resident said there seems to be an increasing number of driv- ers who are failing to stop at Harwich Road.

They said: “It happened about seven times in the last week.”
