MEMBERS of Colchester’s diverse communities came together to celebrate culture through food, music and dance.

The Festival of Rice and Spice took place at Firstsite and welcomed hundreds of visitors.

The event, supported by Essex Police and Colchester Council, was organised by the Colchester Multi Ethnic Forum.

Members come together ensure residents know of the positive contribution of the town’s diverse cultures.

Vibha Osbon, lead organiser of the festival, said: “We wanted to create something that people would come to and be involved in, something for the people by the people, as we all have so much to offer, share and enjoy.”

Visitors were able take part in sushi making workshops and sample Nepalese food while other cultures showcased their traditional dishes, costume and dance.

A Ceilidh band provided a soundtrack for the day while Syrian and Greek dancers also took part.

Newcomers also had the chance to take part in a Bollywood dance workshop.

Poobie Naidoo, chairman of the Multi Ethnic Forum, added: “This is an opportunity to bring people together and celebrate our rich heritage and diversity.

“There is so much to enjoy and share together, especially at these times, and what better way than through food, music and culture.”
