HAVE-a-go heroes hauled a suspected drink driver to the ground as he tried to flee the scene of a smash.

The man was behind the wheel of a car which crashed into a brand new white Vauxhall at about 6.40pm on Monday in Drury Road, Colchester.

But as he tried to get away, the driver was held down by two men as they waited for police to arrive at the scene.

The shunt meant the parked Vauxhall, which was empty, was pushed forward about eight metres into a wall.

Eyewitness Dave Buckingham said the smash “shook every house in the street”.

The 39-year-old, who had been watching a week-long live stream of Katy Perry’s life at the time, said: “It sounded like a bomb going off.

“Everyone who ran out of their homes all came out saying: ‘Bomb’, but we obviously quickly realised what had happened.

“The dark car was in the middle of the road and the driver was was still behind the wheel with his head in the airbag .

“I immediately called 999 and asked for police and an ambulance because my initial thought was the driver had been injured.

“But then he started to get out of the car and suddenly it dawned on everyone he was drunk - very drunk.”

The photographer, who lives in Drury Road, added: “As he was standing with some people it must have dawned on him what was happening and he started to run away but two passers-by blocked his path and said: ‘You’re going nowhere mate.’ “They just held him on the ground and I called the police again because I could hear sirens but I had no idea how far away they were.

“I said to them: ‘We’ve got two people holding a suspect here for you, how far away are you?’ “They were asking me for a description of him in case he did get away.

“But pretty quickly a police van arrived with one officer and I said to him: ‘That’s your suspect there on the ground,’ and he just said: ‘Oh, thanks.’ “ The Katy Perry fan added: “Even when he was arrested, he wasn’t going quietly.

“He was shouting about wanting another drink and tried to wrestle free from the officer.

“Then, when he was in the van you could hear him banging in there, it was like he was having a party.”

An Essex Police spokesman confirmed a 31-year-old man from Colchester has been arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs at about 6.50pm on Monday.

He has been released pending further investigations.
