TEAMS of golfers got to rub shoulders with the stars as they teed off at a celebrity golf charity fundraiser.

The event was organised by Steffi Shilton, wife of England’s most capped player and goalkeeping legend Peter and took place at the Essex Golf and Country Club, in Earls Colne yesterday.

Sporting stars who took part included Grand National winner Bob Champion, 400m runner Derek Redmond and West Ham legend Sir Trevor Brooking.

Tickets were sold for rounds of golf with the celebrities, an evening gala and an auction raised extra funds for St Helena Hospice.

Mr Shilton said: “It is such a great cause and they do fantastic work and we wanted to raise the profile as well as raise money for the hospice.

“We have got a lovely bunch of celebrities and even their wives have been helping. It has been a team effort.”

The couple visited a therapy and wellbeing group at the hospice and decided they wanted to get involved and help.

Mrs Shilton said: “We must not take the hospice for granted.

“We have to realise the importance of what they do and it is not Government supported.

“I also wanted to run the event because I wanted to raise awareness of fitness in seniors and golf is a great way of doing exercise.”
