A RESIDENT campaign group have been formed petitioning for traffic calming measures on the A131.

The Sandy Lane Action Group are campaigning for traffic calming measures on Ballingdon Hill, Ballingdon Street and Cross Street, Sudbury.

The A131 sees traffic flows in excess of three million vehicles per year, and includes East Anglia's most polluted street, Cross Street, which has a primary school within 100 metres.

SLAAG Chair and resident Theo Bird said: “The Western Bypass has been long promised, particularly around elections, but at the earliest it’s still a decade or three away. However, in the run up to the County Council Elections we want this petition to send a clear message to our future County Councillor to focus on what we constituents realistically want to see for our Vote in a foreseeable timescale."

Suggested mitigation measures include, where appropriate speed reductions to 20MPH, Multi storey car park for residents at the top of Cross Street, traffic light rationalisation at the Bulmer Road / A134 junction and vehicle activated speed awareness signs, A12 Sudbury signage via the A134 instead of via the A120 / Halstead.

As well as pedestrian and cycleway enhancements and a speed camera on Ballingdon Hill to discourage overtaking on the double bollards prior to the left turn.
