A building at Halstead Hospital has been named after the man without whom it wouldn’t have been built.

Leonard Ratcliff was the chairman of the League of Friends of Halstead Hospital between 1985 and 1994.

He managed to secure £100,000 worth of funding to open a ward unit at the hospital in 1993.

Former chairman of the Friends, Robin Waters, said: “We have been working for some time to get permission to name the top part of the hospital, as we keep referring to it just as the top part of the hospital.

“We got permission to name it the Leonard Ratcliff Centre and last Tuesday, we unveiled the plaque.

“The reason we wanted to name it that is because without his work and vision, this building would never have been built.

“All the trustees agree this as well.”

Mr Ratcliff, 95, was president from 1997 until Tuesday, when he handed the role to George Courtauld.
