Traders fear that a 100-stall market to be held in Witham’s high street will kill off businesses.

The Witham Town Centre Development Community Interest Company (CIC) and a potential market provider have set three trial dates for October, November and December It is hoped that the giant market could become weekly.

Essex County Council has yet to agree to close Newland Street on market day.

Peter Hill, 65, who has ran Mondy Ironmongers in Newland Street for 21 years, said: “I am sure this would be to the detriment of Witham and it will kill the high street stone dead."

Surely anything to get more people into the town is a good thing. The high street is already all but dead. Its been slowly declining for a few years now and desperately needs new life breathing into it! At least give this trial a chance, it will bring people into the town centre who would never have bothered otherwise.

i think this market is a bad idea it will cause absolute chaos for car users to shut the high street - so NO to this idea paul ryland should have gone ahead with the idea he had many years ago to make the site we had for the sunday market in maldon road into a shopping mall - but instead all we got were loads of small houses on this site - which the people of witham didnt want

I agree that anything that brings shoppers into the town can only be good, but surely we need to concentrate on encouraging some decent shops into the town. Who wants to come to a town full of bookies and charity shops.
Witham was once beautiful how wonderful if it can be again.

Regarding messages above, Epping High Street is much wider than Witham. Witham has the A12 by-pass, should there be an accident on the by-pass all traffic would then have to be diverted through the Town. The
Essex County Council would be mad to allow stalls in Newlands Street due to health and safety.

I think it's a good idea to have a market, let's try the trial period before we start moaning, we don't have much in the High street now apart from betting/charity shops. It's about time Witham had something decent going for it instead of everything going to Btaintree.

What a spiteful reaction to other traders of similar caliber; it's not like they are planning to slap a McDonalds and a Primark in the middle of town.

Perhaps they should try and get out there and be competitive; perhaps it will also bring more people who would otherwise go to Braintree or Chelmsford.

I go to Chelmsford for the market there, so any other shopping visits I make will also be in Chelmsford, not in Witham.

Competition is GOOD for customers and traders alike, perhaps current traders need to up their game a bit if they want to keep their customer base. A market with 100 stalls has got to be a good thing for Witham especially now Dorothy Perkins is now closing its doors.
