Steve Arthur's car got stuck in the sinkhole-like chasm

The hole was at least two feet deep

A motorist has told of his shock at the moment the road collapsed leaving his car stuck in a huge pothole.

Steve Arthur, 27, was driving down Bradleys Lane, near Halstead, on his way to work on Monday, August 11.

Mr Arthur, of Dynes Hall Road, Halstead, said: “It was lucky I wasn’t travelling fast because it would have been a write-off, the car could have flipped."

The angry driver said he had pulled over to let another vehicle pass on the road also known as Lover’s Lane when the tarmac gave way, pulling the front left wheel of his Vauxhall Astra into the chasm.

Not a Pot hole is it??? it is the road edge & it has to finish somewhere! good luck to him & a shame it happened! but not no way ever a pothole! Road did not give away!! no road there! called the "Haunching"but THE Haunching had washed away! if you doing a Highway inspection you looking at the surface that is trafficked! not a leaf covered a verge unless it has water "Lets" that get bunged up! People have & do not understand a "Pothole & the way we could illuminate them! just think??? the last 10 yrs or so? never been so bad! & the answer to it all! road users moan about! & call it a cheap process! "Surface dressing" it is very cheap! but very very effective!! & will put another 10 to 15 years on a roads life! But motorists has to comply to a temporary speed limit & loose chippings which is not a problem if the speed recommended kept to!! A brand new Road surface' lasts about 5 years or so before getting porous & soaking in & retaining water! Winter Freeze!! then thaw! = potholes! & a basic Preventative maintenance process' "cheap old "Tar & chippings" seals it for years! alway's has! alway's will! But not a vote winner & local Highway's very cautious because of moaners that moan for a week then forget their road surface ok for 10 years!
