Angry pubgoers have slammed a council decision to approve plans to turn their local into a shop and flat.

Staff and customers from the The Woodman Inn, Colchester Road, Halstead, told a Braintree Council meeting the pub is an important community asset.

However, councillors said they were powerless to refuse the plans because they could not base their decision on a potential change of use.

Current tenant Shaun Redfern said: “Another pub bites the dust, courtesy of your local council.

“They could have asked for a detailed report from highways but it was a done deal, they are prepared to take a risk with people’s lives.”

Why is a place to drink alcohol a community asset? If it was such an asset then the change of use would not occur as it would be too profitable.

A shop and a flat is more use than a not profitable pub.

Simply because (Jack222) public houses are one of the last places available where people can gather & socialise in a welcoming environment. Unfortunately there is a loophole which allows change of use, without any application, when it comes to public houses & being of a decent size they are getting swallowed up for use as shops at market price regardless of how well they are doing!
