Footballer Joe Cole surprised opticians in Braintree when he popped in for an eye test.

Customers at Patrick and Menzies Independent Opticians were pleasantly surprised when West Ham footballer and contact lens wearer Joe Cole took time out from the pitch to visit sports optometrists Gavin Rebello for a routine eye review.

Joe Cole said: “Without wearing contact lenses, I wouldn't have been able to play at the high standards I did for my teams and my country.”

That's news?

Well in that case - and in continuation of the process of Elevating the Newsworthy Celebrity Status of Braintree I think you should know that every time you read something submitted by 'Yours Truly' here you are reading the very words as poked out by little pinkies belonging to a hand that has shook the hand that has shook the hand of someone who shook the hand of none other that that famous pugilist Rocky Marciano!

(Authentic traceability audit trail available on request)

Now if that hasn't put 'Braintree on the map' I can't begin to think what might!
