Halstead Gazette: Film archive release unveils century of memories Film archive release unveils century of memories

Film clips showing events and activities from Halstead during the last century have been made available to view online.

Newsreel archive British Pathe has made all 85,000 of its historic clips available on YouTube, featuring events from 1896 to 1976.

One of the earliest clips in the archive features hundreds of Girl Guides marching up Halstead High Street.

The wartime video, from a consecration of the colours ceremony, was shot between 1914 and 1918.

British Pathe general manager Alastair White said: “Our hope is that everyone, everywhere who has a computer will see these films and enjoy them."

A colour recording, from 1955, shows members of the Essex Hydroplane Racing Club taking part in a high-speed race around Gosfield Lake.
