Halstead’s day centre is counting the cost after its beloved beach hut was hit by the tidal surge.

The beach, which members visit every summer, was damaged in last week’s tidal surge during which Brightlingsea was hit particularly badly.

Everything inside the day centre’s hut, which had only just been refurbished, was damaged by the water as it was moved about a foot by the swell.

Day centre manager Veronica Harman said: “We were luckier than most.

“The one next door washed right up to the public toilets but ours was well tethered so we were very lucky.”

One of the drivers from the day centre has been up to assess the damage but Mrs Harman said they had taken no risks and made sure the hut was insured.

She added: “The beach hut is very important to our members, for many trips to the seaside would be non existent otherwise, they love it so much.

“We will make sure it is ready for next summer.

“We are always fundraising but for anyone who wants to donate we are in need of a cooker.

“People donate all the time, it just shows the community support.”
