Katie Holmes has made her first public appearance since her split from Tom Cruise was announced, without her wedding ring.

The 33-year-old actress - who filed for divorce last week after five years of marriage to the Top Gun star - stepped out in New York, smiling, to film a slot for TV show Project Runway: All Stars.

Sources told People that Katie, who was recently seen moving out of the apartment she shared with Tom, had done "great" during filming.

Tom, who was forced to celebrate his 50th birthday alone in Iceland where he is filming sci fi thriller Oblivion, is said to be "devastated and heartbroken" by the split.

The actor's lawyer Bert Fields refused to say if Katie had signed a pre-nup and added: "I would hope that it's not a contentious matter. I know Tom is not a particularly contentious person."

Katie allegedly feared daughter Suri Cruise would be sent to Scientology bootcamp by Tom, it has been claimed.

Children aged six to 12 chosen for induction into Scientology, of which the Rock Of Ages star is a follower, are sent without their parents to be taught the rules of the cult and undergo a rigorous security check, according to The Sun.
