BRENDAN Wiredu has been an ever present so far, during Wayne Brown's interim spell in charge of Colchester United.

The U's caretaker first-team boss has been impressed by the midfielder's performances since he took over in the JobServe Community Stadium hot seat.

The 21-year-old has been one of Colchester's most consistent performers of late, having joined them on a permanent basis from Charlton Athletic last month.

Wiredu's performance against Newport County was one of only a few bright spots for the U's, in the 2-0 defeat last weekend.

He is enjoying a productive start to his permanent stay at the U's, having enjoyed a loan spell with Colchester under John McGreal in the 2019-20 season.

The midfielder made ten league and cup appearances for the club, during that stint.

Brown said: “I thought he was brilliant again, up against what was a very experienced midfield.

“He was tested but he puts his foot in and he’s got that hunger and desire to get around the pitch – he’s got quality on the ball.

“Brendan’s been great for the last three games that I’ve been involved in.

“He gives you that energy, he gives you that desire.

“Yes, at times he’s naïve but I can live with that but that hunger and desire should be minimum requirement, all over the pitch.

“It stands out a mile because he’s one of the only ones that wants to do it – gets close to people, puts tackles in, tries to break the game up but then he’s got quality.

“The kids got a chance and I’ve loved working with him for this short period and we’ll keep being positive around the group and with him as well."

Wiredu will be looking to help Colchester get some valuable points on the board tomorrow night when they travel to play Harrogate Town.

It is the U's first-ever trip to the EnviroVent Stadium and they are in desperate need of a win, having slid to 20th position and just seven points above the League Two drop zone.
