NEWPORT County boss Michael Flynn was happy to create a little piece of history with his side following their 2-0 triumph at Colchester United.

The Exiles claimed their first win at Colchester for nearly half a century, after goals from Joss Labadie and Padraig Amond gave them victory at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Flynn said: “I thought it was a superb performance by the lads.

“I told you – I’ll never write these boys off.

“A couple of you might want to at times but I’m not getting carried away.

“It’s three points and it’s the first time that we’ve won at Colchester since 1973.

“We’d only scored one goal here since 1974 and that was last year so it’s a big, big monkey off the back for the football club.

“It’s small margins; if we’re getting played off the park week in, week out and not creating anything I understand it and I’ve been in football a long, long time.

“But that’s not been the case – we’ve made individual errors and missed chances at the other end and when that happens on a consistent level you tend to go on a bad run but between the boxes, we’ve been playing well and it was a real team effort.

"The most pleasing thing was that there was a lot more organisation and talking between them as a team.

"Wins breed confidence and that's what we want to do.

"We want to keep chipping away, one game at a time and we'll see where it takes us.

"The effort has always been there - a lack of quality and decision making at times? Yes.

"Today, they were able to focus on the task and do their jobs and not worry about if they take an extra touch if it's bobbly."

Colchester finished the game with ten men after former Newport striker Frank Nouble was sent off after picking up a second caution in as many minutes, just prior to the visitors scoring their second.

Nouble received his yellow card for an apparent kick at Josh Sheehan, as the players ran back ready for a throw-in.

"I'll be honest - I didn't see it," said Flynn, who managed Nouble at Newport.

"I know that he did stand on him (Josh Sheehan).

"That can happen anyway and it doesn't mean that he's meant to do it.

"I don't like seeing ex-players get sent off especially ones I've got time for.

"But we'll take it, because it's helped us get a win."

Meanwhile, Flynn said he was expecting Colchester to start with three at the back and Omar Sowunmi in the team against his side.

The U's started Sowunmi in a three-man defence against Carlisle last week but switched to a four and left the big defender on the bench, for the Exiles clash.

"I thought about starting Ryan (Taylor) at one point but there was no point...we were expecting them to play a three," added Flynn.

"I was expecting (Omar) Sowunmi to start as well.

"We can do all of the research and analysis we want but we don't really know what they're going to do.

"They were a three last week and they went back to a four and I just thought that a little bit of movement off the smaller two might cause them problems."
