NEW Colchester United interim first-team coach Wayne Brown says he will be striving to change the mentality of his squad in a bid to halt their winless run.

Brown took training for the first time today after being put in temporary charge of the U's, following the departure of Steve Ball as head coach earlier this week.

The U's 2006 promotion winner has been tasked with halting a miserable run which has seen them fail to win any of their last 13 matches, in League Two.

It has led to Colchester sliding down to fourth from bottom in the table and while Brown says he won't be making big changes, he nevertheless wants to boost confidence in the camp.

Brown said: "I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel but it's one of those where we need to change the mentality of the team - that's evident.

"We've done our utmost to be positive around the lads today and draw out some non-negotiables, which I think is important.

"It will be very difficult to change things massively with the squad how we are.

"If you change too much from a players' point of view, you tend not to get a massive buy in.

"But there's definitely going to be some changes around the place short term and don't forget this is an interim role - I've not been given the job.

"It's a good opportunity for me to impress but the only way you're going to do that is by getting points on the board and that's what we'll be looking to do.

"If you look at the start of the season that we had, it was a fantastic start.

"We got a lot of points on the board but every team has bad runs, even in the top flight at the moment.

"It happens and that's football - it's just how quickly you can turn that run around and get out of a rut.

"That's exactly what the aim is short term.

"We want to put some points on the board and get out of this rut.

"Myself, the staff and the players will be doing everything we can to do that."

Colchester head to high-flying Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, aiming to secure a much-needed victory.

Brown added: "It's always tough when you're in this run as a player because confidence is low and you don't really know where the next points are coming from.

"Let's get it right - we've been beaten by the odd goal and we've been picking up draws.

"We've not been beaten convincingly for a number of weeks so there's no alarm bells ringing for players and staff.

"We know where we are and we'll be looking to turn it around as quickly as we can."
