FORMER Stanway Rovers striker Mike Fondop has landed a move to League One outfit Burton Albion.

The 27-year-old, who played in the Thurlow Nunn League for Rovers in the 2014-15 season, has signed a short-term deal with the Brewers until the end of the season.

The Cameroonian arrived in the UK in 2013 to study actuarial sciences at the University of Essex, in Colchester.

Fondop, who graduated with first class honours in 2017, has progressed up the pyramid since his Stanway days and now has the chance to shine in the EFL.

He made his Burton debut as a second-half substitute in their 3-0 home defeat against Sunderland, on Saturday.

Fondop told iFollow Brewers: “I’m very, very excited. I couldn’t sleep on Thursday night, just because of the news I was told (about signing).

“I can’t wait to hit the ground running and to show to the club and the fans what I’m capable of doing.

“I have to mention that the welcome from the players and the staff has been amazing.

"Since day one, everyone has been very welcoming to me, from the manager to his staff and the playing staff.

“I didn’t feel like a stranger and that has helped me to integrate easily. All the sessions were technical with very good players, and I feel that my level is definitely going to rise up, and I’m going to learn a lot from them.”

Fondop has joined Burton after his short-term deal at National League side Aldershot Town expired.

The striker, who has also played for the likes of Wrexham, Oxford City and Billericay Town, had spent the 2019/20 season at Chesterfield, finishing as their top scorer with 11 goals.

Burton manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink told the club's website: “He’s a big boy, a good target man, but also mobile.

“We have been looking to add a striker because we only have Kane Hemmings who is struggling with injury, Luke Varney and Lucas Akins – who is playing striker and doing well – and we feel we need back-up in that position.

“He’s also someone who can come off the bench and he can play in a different way and we can be more direct.

“He has a nose for goal, he’s a threat in the air and we are happy he has signed a short-term contract and, in the summer, we will look at it again.”
