HALSTEAD Town manager Mark McLean remains positive and upbeat following his side’s latest pre-season friendly against Heybridge Swifts, writes GRAHAM DOVER.

The Humbugs lost 3-1 at home to the Isthmian League division north team, at the Milbank Stadium but had the home side’s missed chances been converted the result could have been different.

McLean was disappointed to concede the three goals but nevertheless was encouraged by his team’s performance.

They had a good balance to their play with the defence playing compactly, and going forward they put the opposition under pressure and created a number of chances.

But on occasions his team switched off at the back and when playing against Step Four level players you are always likely to be punished; this was the case with the first two goals.

McLean also spoke with enthusiasm about the new additions who have been incorporated into the squad.

These include the experienced Greg Strong, previously with Saffron Walden, Alfie Cleal from Witham and the returning Joe Jones and Louis O’Sullivan.

One downside on the evening was the second half injury to team captain, Jake Brown who had to be helped off with a shoulder injury.

A subsequent x-ray revealed a broken collarbone and although no operation is necessary he is likely to need the protection of a sling for at least six weeks.

This was Halstead’s first home game since the government relaxed the rules regarding spectator access to football matches and as an indication about how live football has been missed.

More than 120 spectators braved the rain and the worst of Storm Francis to attend.

The club took the opportunity to test their safety procedures before the new season starts in earnest and the system seemed to work well.

After the game the club’s Covid-19 officer, David Williamson, spoke about how pleased he was with the measures that the club has put into place.

He said that he will continue to review operating protocols to meet ever-changing Government and FA guidance and this will help keep players, spectators and officials attending the ground as safe as possible.

The Humbugs play their final pre-season game on Saturday when Ongar Town are the visitors to the Milbank Stadium.

The game kicks off at 3pm and again spectators are welcome to attend.

Mclean will use this game to fine-tune his team before thoughts turn to the club’s FA Cup tie away to Ilford FC next Wednesday (September 2).

He is aware of how Ilford set up and how they play and believes he has the team and the tactics to achieve a successful result.

The number of spectators allowed at this game will be limited according to FA guidelines and to avoid disappointment Ilford are inviting spectators to pre-book and pay for their tickets beforehand. This will guarantee admittance.
