DEAN Gerken believes Colchester United’s eye-catching win over Swindon Town will make people sit up and take notice in League Two.

The U’s goalkeeper was in eye-catching form to help his side claim a 3-1 victory over the league leaders and draw to within three points of the automatic promotion places.

Gerken said: “It’s 16 games unbeaten now - the result is a massive one in the league and I think everyone will be looking at it.

“It was a well hyped up game and I’m glad we got the three points.

“I was buzzing to play my part but it’s all about the win and I’m happier about that.

“In previous teams I’ve played for, when you go 1-0 down sometimes you just think ‘that’s it’.

“But here, I’d honestly say hand on heart that there’s a never-say-die mentality and we’ve got that at the moment.”

Gerken made a string of excellent saves to help keep his side in the contest, before and after they had fallen behind to Diallang Jaiyesimi’s opener.

Theo Robinson’s brace and Luke Norris’s header helped John McGreal’s side turn things around and claim a significant win, in their promotion hunt.

“I’m all about the league anyway, so that was one of my favourite performances so far, this season,” said the former Ipswich Town goalkeeper.

“The two home games I’ve played against Swindon have probably been my busiest.

“You have to give respect to Swindon for that, for the sort of team that they are.”

Colchester’s win over Swindon helped them extend their unbeaten league run to 16 matches.

The U’s have not tasted defeat since losing to Morecambe last October and keeper Gerken believes the team spirit that currently exists within the squad is playing a big part in their success.

He said: “Everyone’s together, everyone wants to socialise with each other; we’ve got a group chat and it goes off all the time.

“The boys buzz with it and you could say that the boys have a genuine love for each other within the team - that’s only going to make us stronger.”

Colchester will be hoping to build on their win over Swindon this weekend when they travel to play Cambridge United, who yesterday sacked their manager Colin Calderwood.

Gerken added: “It’s a bit of a derby and I’m sure it’ll be a good atmosphere.

“We’ve got to take this result into it and we’re in a good place, at the minute.”
