ESSEX Rebels overcame an eventful journey to finish strongly and see off Solent Kestrels, in their National League division two match.

The University of Essex-based side turned up just five minutes before the start of the match, after their minibus broke down on their way to Southampton.

But despite their frantic pre-match build-up, they were still able to claim a 86-80 win.

Essex Rebels head coach Ross Norfolk said: “Considering our journey to the game and our slow start, we showed the resilience to stay focused during important moments of the game.

"Our bench once again contributed heavily with 38 points. A great team performance."

Following their lack of preparation for the game, the Rebels' start was slow and sluggish and Kestrels took full advantage.

Rebels trailed 21-17 in the first quarter but coach Norfolk rallied the side and the second quarter was a different story.

Led by American Masa Swain's 11 points, the visitors started to find some offensive rhythm and went into half-time leading 40-36.

The second half came round quickly and it seemed to have a negative effect on the visitors.

Solent came out firing, winning the third quarter 27-18 and Rebels had work to do.

The final stanza saw new signing Lee Hodges step up and show his presence.

Early on into the quarter Essex made some big shots to tighten the home side's lead.

Going into the final three minutes, the Rebels were able to pull away with some huge three-point shooting from Lavinier.

Essex were able to keep their cool and close out the game, to finish victorious.

The familiar face of Hodges, who plays for the University of Essex Premiership side Essex Blades, returned against Solent Kestrels.

He made his debut for the Essex Rebels having recently completed his transfer from National Basketball League division one side Hemel Storm.

Arguably the best English player in division one, the seven foot centre was truly a dominant force and the Rebels will look to utilise his skills and prowess to keep their play-off run and promotion hopes alive.

Hodges will make his home debut when the Rebels host Sussex Bears, on February 8.
