BRING on Spurs!

With such a big cup-tie on the horizon, John McGreal was understandably anxious that his Colchester United players did not lose their focus, in the build-up to their clash with Leyton Orient.

But now that the U’s have taken care of business and picked up three valuable league points, they can now start looking forward to being part of one of the biggest games to be staged at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Sadly, Colchester haven’t had too many big cup fixtures to savour at the venue since its inception, back in 2008.

Indeed, the visit of Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup fourth round back in 2016 was the last time the U’s have had a showpiece occasion like this to savour (putting aside their dramatic final-day escape act against Preston North End in the 2014-15 season, which felt like a cup final).

They deserve their opportunity in the limelight and the chance to shine in front of a sell-out crowd and on the national stage, against illustrious opponents.

Colchester certainly more than held their own in the last round of the Carabao Cup.

They went to the home of Premier League club Crystal Palace and did not look in the least bit intimidated by the experience, eventually prevailing on penalties at Selhurst Park.

That bodes well for this game and how the U’s would love a similar outcome, against Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Some Colchester fans feel that this might be a good time to be taking on Spurs.

The North London outfit are still reeling after losing at Leicester City in controversial circumstances and they are yet to hit full flow yet.

But such stuttering form might have the reverse effect and progress in the Carabao Cup could be seen as the catalyst to kick-start their campaign.

That is not the concern of Colchester, though.

McGreal and his side will have the utmost respect for their opponents but at the same time, they must also be confident in their own ability.

After all, they proved they can match Premier League opponents with their result and performance at Selhurst Park in the last round.

If the U’s can pull off an unlikely shock tomorrow night, it will go down as one of the biggest results in their history.
