A coveted final League Two play-off place is still up for grabs – and John McGreal insists his Colchester United side are still very much in the hunt to nail it.

The U’s lie two points off seventh-placed Exeter City with two games remaining, following yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Yeovil Town.

Colchester are one of four teams on 64 points, two points behind the seventh-placed Grecians ahead of the U’s crucial home game with automatic promotion contenders MK Dons, on Saturday.

U’s boss McGreal said: “We’re still there - we’ve been there all season.

“It’s fantastic, the young team that I’ve got and it’s all to play for.

“It wasn’t to be (at Yeovil) but we’ve scrapped and fought and managed to get a point out of it.

“It gives us another opportunity to play at home against another top team vying for a top-three finish.”

Colchester were without senior trio Harry Pell, Luke Prosser and Rene Gilmartin for the trip to Yeovil.

And they were forced to make a late change to their starting line-up at Huish Park, after left-back Kane Vincent-Young had to pull out of the side close to kick-off because of an existing abdominal injury.

As a result, Abo Eisa was drafted into the side with Brennan Dickenson filling in at left-back.

“Some of the boys are going through the pain barrier,” said McGreal.

“These things get thrown at you and at this time of the season.

“All you can do is try and smile and deal with it in your head and try and take the positives out of it.”

Goalkeeper Dillon Barnes will now miss Colchester’s next three games after he was sent off for violent conduct at Yeovil.

Barnes’ dismissal early in the second half against the Glovers forced boss McGreal to make changes, in order to bring on substitute keeper Ethan Ross between the sticks for the remainder of the game.

Midfielder Sam Saunders was taken off as a result and boss McGreal admits that it was a difficult situation all round.

McGreal added: “It was a tough decision but I just felt in that midfield area, we just needed to keep the legs going in there.

“It was one of those where I had to forsake an influential player for legs in that area and that’s what we went for.”
