There was a long trip for an FA Vase tie and a change at the top in division one south, but which of our local Thurlow Nunn League sides was the star performer on an interesting day of action.

The side looking to progress in the FA Vase was FC Clacton and the Seasiders had to make the lengthy journey to Lincolnshire to face Deeping Rangers as they looked to book a place in the last 32 of this year's competition.

However, they returned to Essex with dreams of Wembley shelved for another year after a 4-2 defeat.

Clacton were on the back foot early after Deeping went ahead in the seventh minute when a cross from the right was turned in by Dan Schiavi, but they hit back and Harry McDonald saw a shot saved by Rangers keeper Lewis Elsam.

The Seasiders did pull the game back level when Karl Andrade fired home from the penalty spot after he had been brought down by Elsam and they almost went ahead when Jake Plane drilled an effort against the home crossbar.

However, the game got away from them just after the half-hour mark when Deeping scored twice in quick succession.

The first came on 33 minutes when a David Burton-Jones shot was deflected into the Clacton goal off Michael Simpson and, two minutes later, they went further ahead when Dan Jarvis fired home from the edge of the area.

It could have been worse for the visitors, but they managed to get into half-time trailing by two goals and came out looking for a way back into the tie after the break.

Andrade saw a headed effort saved by Elsam, but Plane did halve the deficit on 55 minutes when his free-kick was deflected into the home goal.

It was all to play for now, but the Seasiders weren't able to grab a crucial equaliser and Deeping finally secured their place in the next round when Jarvis got his second of the game on 81 minutes to wrap up a 4-2 win for the hosts.

FC Clacton will return to Thurlow Nunn League premier division action next week, but it didn't prove a good day for a side in top flight league action on Saturday as Brantham Athletic fell to a 3-0 home defeat against Kirkley & Pakefield.

There was also a home loss in division one south for Wivenhoe Town, with the Dragons falling to a 1-0 defeat against May & Baker.

Also in division one south, two games involving local sides made sure there was a change at the top and one of those picks up our star performance award.

It goes to Holland FC after a superb win at leaders White Ensign.

Ensign were unbeaten in seven games in all competitions, including a win on penalties against FC Clacton in the League Cup in midweek, but fell to a 3-2 defeat at home by Holland.

The hosts led twice in the game and were 2-1 ahead at half-time, but two second-half strikes gave Holland a memorable victory that left them in the top five in the division one south table.

And their award-winning win also helped bring about a change at the top as Halstead Town took over at the summit.

However, it was a bittersweet climb for the Humbugs as they found themselves pegged back to a draw by visiting Little Oakley after being 3-0 ahead in the first half.

Halstead placed themselves in the driving seat with strikes from Ben Morgan, Joe Morris and Kane Gilbert, but the Acorns pulled one back before half-time, added a second after the break and scored an equaliser in time added-on at the end.

Greg Rodger, Luke Mayhew and Lewis Wood were on target for Oakley.

There was disappointment for Coggeshall United as their home game against Frenford was postponed.
