Colchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup after losing 1-0 at Accrington Stanley, on Saturday afternoon.

A deflected strike by Dan Barlaser in the first half gave the Reds victory at the Crown Ground and helped them progress to the second round.

Colchester. who lost defender Tom Eastman and goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin inside the opening half hour, had their chances particularly in the opening 20 minutes of the first-round tie but could not force a replay.

Here, Colchester United reporter Jonathan Waldron rates the players following the U's 1-0 cup defeat:

RENE GILMARTIN 6

U’s keeper was relatively untested before going off with a hamstring injury on the half-hour mark.

RYAN JACKSON 7

Put in a strong performance at right-back but was prevented from getting forward as much as possible.

FRANKIE KENT 7

Looked strong in central defence and generally dealt well with the considerable threat of Accrington striker Kee. Booked.

TOM EASTMAN 6

Had his afternoon cruelly cut short after suffering a head injury inside the opening minute following his recall to the team.

KANE VINCENT-YOUNG 7

Was a competent performer at left-back but could do little to prevent Colchester from bowing out of the FA Cup.

HARRY PELL 7

Went close with a header early on and was unlucky to see Barlazer’s shot deflect off him and loop into the net for the winner.

TOM LAPSLIE 7

U’s man of the match. Never stopped working for his side and allowed Accrington little space in midfield to play.

COURTNEY SENIOR 6

Showed some neat footwork and skill but faded out of the contest a little in the second half.

SAMMIE SZMODICS 7

Was unlucky not to score on a few occasions in the first half and also went close to forcing a replay deep into stoppage-time.

BRENNAN DICKENSON 6

Battled hard for his side on his return to the starting line-up but was given little change by the Accrington defence.

FRANK NOUBLE 6

Was denied by keeper Rapley when through on goal early on. Booked for simulation after going down in the area in the second half.

SUBSTITUTES

LUKE PROSSER (for Eastman, 3) 6

U’s captain did well but will be disappointed to have given away possession in lead up to Accrington’s winner.

DILLON BARNES (for Gilmartin, 30) 7

Had little chance with the deflected goal and made a couple of decent saves in the second half to keep U’s in the tie.

MIKAEL MANDRON (for Senior, 76) 6

Was unable to make much of an impact after coming on for the final stages of the tie.

SUBSTITUTES (NOT USED): Wright, Comley, Collins, Gondoh.
