COLNE ENGAINE 2 LANGHAM LODGERS 0
Lexden Memorial Cup quarter-finals
Colne Engaine reached the semi-finals of the Lexden Memorial Cup with a 2-0 victory over division one promotion hopefuls Langham Lodgers.
Goals from Ross Yates and Joe Morris saw division two side Engaine through at a very wet Burches Meadow.
Both sides were guilty of squandering chances in the first half, with Paul Rolfe the busier of the two keepers in the Engines’ goal, making two important stops to deny the visitors the lead. So it was against the run of play when the hosts broke the deadlock as captain Ben Eary floated in a free-kick from the left and Yates smashed home from five yards.
The finishing in the second half was not much better than in the first, but winger Adam Morris was a constant threat.
Colne Engaine doubled their advantage in scrappy circumstances.
Both Morrises – Adam and Joe – had shots blocked well by Langham’s keeper, but Joe did eventually get the second from close range.
Langham pushed on to try and get back in the game – sending their keeper up for three corners in the final ten minutes – but the Engines held firm to book a place in the semis.
They will now face division two promotion rivals Brantham Athletic Colts in the last four on February 27, but first travel to bottom side Cavendish Reserves in the league tomorrow (kick-off 2pm).
Colne Engaine: P Rolfe, R Yates, S King, M. Bower, B Eary, A McCall, J Pearce, J McCall, A Morris (C Hansey 75), C Amos, J Morris.
