Halstead archery ace Imogen Newby was on county duty as Essex faced Kent at Rayleigh Town Archery Club.

The ten-year-old Chappel Primary School pupil had earned her county call-up in the Junior Ladies’ Recurve competition thanks to scores that had been submitted over the last 12 months and she was shooting a Metric V round – three dozen arrows at 30m, 20m, 15m and 10m.

Gusty conditions made it tough for the archers, but Newby wanted to break the county under-12 Metric V record of 1,308.

She started off with a score of 322 at 30m, before a great performance at 20m as she added 335 points, a 333-point return at 15m and a great finish of 356 at 10m for a total score of 1,346.

Not only did she beat the previous Metric V record by 38 points, but in doing so, claimed another four county records over the various distances and was just five points away from equalling the national record.

Once all the scores were submitted, the match results were announced and Essex won by more than 1,000 points.
