Essex Police has confirmed an investigation has been launched and a man has been arrested and bailed.

Community leaders said the incident will cause some concern in the community.

Mark Flewitt, Tory councillor for St Laurence and former councillor for public protection, said: “These are horrific reports and the need for a quality police investigation is high.

“There is also a high need for people to come forward with any information about the alleged incident and this will help both the victim and the alleged perpetrator.

“This sort of incidents are always shocking and that’s why there is such a high need for a quality investigation and people to come forward with information.

“I am very pleased to hear there was swift action and investigation by the police in this case.

“I think any incidents like this will cause some concern in the community.

“However it’s important to remember that these incidents are not very frequent and that should act as some reassurance to worried residents in this area and the community.

“We do not want this sort of thing going on anywhere in our borough.”

The Conservative boss added: “Our residents should be able to about their lawful business without being in fear of this sort of thing happening to them.”
