Craftwerk Beers
Alexandra Street, Southend
Top of the pile - Craftwerk Beers
TOP REVIEW: Been there a few times before for drinks, really nice bar. Great selection of craft beers, bottled and on tap. Now they serve food. The pizza, mac ‘n’ cheese and coleslaw we had were lovely. Best pizza I’ve tasted in ages. Will definitely go back to eat as well as drink!

Peggy Sue’s Music Bar
London Road, Leigh
Popular with music fans - Peggy Sue's Music Bar
TOP REVIEW: I've been a regular here while staying over weekly in Essex, so took advantage of their Thursday night open mic evenings to terrorise the locals with my ukulele. They are very accommodating, encouraging and seemed to appreciate my brand of self-effacing, ironic and sometimes plain smutty songs. Made some great friends here, a good accepting bunch of people. Good sound system too. Great to go to even if you don't play - get out and see some live music. I'm not going to get there so frequently now, but went for over a year most Thursdays. Great fun.

Mawson’s Micro Pub
Southchurch Road, Southend
In the top three - Mawson's Micro Pub
TOP REVIEW: I must admit, I looked at the photos and read the reviews and sceptically thought ‘rough local boozer’. However, I could not have been more wrong. The Mawson had a good selection of eight beers and about six ciders on tap, with a varied bottled selection to support and everything we tried was well kept and very well selected. They also offer various tasting paddles if you’re unsure what to pick. The music choice was solid, they offered cheeseboards and crisps for snacks as well as randomly bringing little dishes of very welcome tortillas to the table. Everyone was really friendly. If you’re a fan of craft beer or cider, this award-winning Camra bar is a must on your list in the area and well deserving of its accolades.

Chinnerys
Marine Parade, Southend
Plenty on offer - Chinnerys
TOP REVIEW: Chinnerys is a bar of two halves - a typical seafront boozer at the front, friendly staff, good prices and proper grown up music playing over the sound system. In the back is the live music venue with equally lovely staff and a very friendly fun atmosphere. The Lounge Kittens were the band we went to see, brilliant as always.

The Broker Freehouse
Leigh Road, Leigh
Completing the top five - the Broker Freehouse
TOP REVIEW: The best pub in Leigh! Always a great selection of beers on offer and the best organised place during the Covid restrictions. So well organised and run, it was a pleasure to visit such a reassuringly safe place in contrast to the chaotic ad hoc methods employed elsewhere. Excellent work by the landlady and staff.
