An “oversubscribed” school in Southend is to get extra sports facilities after councillors gave planning permission for three temporary classrooms.

The classrooms will be built at Southchurch High School on Southchurch Boulevard, with two of them being made into changing rooms and the third being an office for PE lessons.

It comes after planning documents said the school is “oversubscribed” and in need of the rooms because it is “struggling for space”.

Councillors unanimously approved the plans during a meeting on Monday night but Conservative Councillor David Garston did raise concerns about potential disturbances to neighbouring properties.

He said: “I was the councillor for this ward so I know it quite well, it is not the location of it but the disturbance to residents early or late evening or even beyond that as people depart from the building.

“If it is after 9pm they will be getting changed and going out onto Southchurch Boulevard and could disturb the residents.”

To address the concerns, it was agreed that the new rooms will only be able to be used between 8am until 9pm.

They will be built on the school car park but is not expected to have any impact on visitors. In total only 11 parking spaces will be lost, reducing the number from 95 to 84.
