More than 400 knives have been emptied from an amnesty bin.

The amnesty bin, outside Basildon police station, was emptied by officers things morning, and 419 knives were found inside.

Essex Police confirmed that these would have been placed in the bin in the last six months.

Other weapons were also found inside, which pictures show to be other bladed weapons, and a type of pistol, which has yet to be confirmed.

The force have also announced there will be increased specific police patrols and operations in the next week.

This comes as part of Operation Sceptre, which has begun today.

A spokesman for the force, said: "Today is the start of Operation Sceptre, enhancing our stance on tackling knife crime across the district.

"Over the next week we will be increasing specific patrols and operations.

This morning we have also emptied our amnesty bin outside Basildon Police Station.

"A total of 419 knives were recovered along with a number of other weapons.

"All these knives have been placed in the bin in the last six months."
