Age concern Southend has closed its social club for the elderly and is calling for donations which it will distribute.

The charity, which operates from the Havens Community Hub in Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff shut its Club 50+ club after the Government advised those over 70 and those with underlying health problems to stay at home.

It has also begun to prepare emergency packages for delivery to the elderly.

Lin Boulter, chief executive of Age Concern Southend, said: “We have put an appeal on our Facebook page calling for donations of food, toiletries and things like puzzles.

“We’ve had a lot of people who want to help. Our befrienders aren’t visiting but they are telephoning people.

“We’ve closed Club 50+ but everything else is still open.”

Ms Boulter added: “We are reminding people to be mindful and keep an eye out for anyone who might need help. If anyone needs help they can get in touch with us”
