HOMEOWNERS are furious after the council refused to fix their waterlogged road – despite their claims it was council workers which caused the blocked drains.

Tony Simmons, who lives on Chestnut Avenue in Billericay, says that after Essex County Council carried out work on the road, a pool of water now appears at the end of the drive.

However, although the issue was investigated by the highways department, he has been told by bosses that the matter would not be investigated further.

The council also maintain it did not carry out the work.

Mr Simmons said: “The council performed work on the road which has now resulted in a pool of water collating at the end of our drive every time that it rains that we did not have before the work was undertaken.

“To advise ‘we won’t be taking any further action on it’ is highly insulting.

“We pay our taxes like everyone else and insist the road is repaired to its original state and not the slapdash effort that it has been left in.”

In a response to Mr Simmons, which the Echo has seen, a spokesman states: “Our recent investigation of this issue has concluded that it is not as serious as many other issues we are aware of, so we won’t be taking any further action on

it.

“This does not mean that this report is not important to us.

“The location will be regularly monitored through scheduled inspections and we may take action in the future if there has been significant deterioration.”

A spokesman from Essex County Council responded to the claims.

She said: “We have looked into this and can’t see any serious flooding issues at this location.

“We are also unaware of any works carried out by Essex Highways there.

“Work may have been carried out by a utility company, or by a company working on private land for a local resident.

“Essex Highways does have to prioritise higher-risk issues first, including flooding and drainage issues, and we would encourage anyone with any concerns to please contact us with more information.”
